Peter Blundy small grants

Introduction

Thanks to the generosity of the late Mr Peter Blundy, SpinalCure Australia is able to provide an award of small grants to assist SCI researchers with career development and advancement of their research (for example, for travel, equipment or further education).

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a researcher, clinician, or MSc/PhD student involved in SCI research related to SpinalCure’s goal of finding a cure for the paralysis caused by spinal cord injury
  • Be working or studying in Australia
  • For travel grants: be a presenting author at a conference, or be travelling to a research establishment for the purpose of collaboration on a relevant research project.

Application process for travel grants

Applications should include:

  • The name, date and venue of the conference or details of the research establishment and  researcher to be visited
  • The estimated and broadly itemised cost of your proposed trip
  • Details of other financial assistance for the same trip that you have applied for or already obtained
  • A short summary of your research (c.500 words)
  • If presenting at a conference, a copy of your abstract
  • If travelling for the purpose of collaboration, a short description of anticipated benefits of the collaboration
  • A list of your publications (if appropriate)
  • In addition, students must provide a letter signed by your supervisor, confirming your eligibility
  • SpinalCure will fund up to $2,500 for international travel and $1,000 for domestic travel.

Application process for equipment grants

Applications should include:

  • A description of the piece of equipment and cost including a current quote for the equipment from the supplier
  • A short summary of your research (c.500 words) where this equipment will be useful to you
  • A list of your publications (if appropriate)
  • In addition, students must provide a letter signed by your supervisor, confirming your eligibility
  • Details of financial assistance already applied for or obtained for the same piece of equipment.
  • SpinalCure will fund up to $4,000 and encourages matched funding from the applicant’s host institution.
  • Please note SpinalCure Australia will not fund retrospectively

Application process for other grant uses

Applications should include:

  • A short summary of your research (c.500 words)
  • A short summary of your proposed use of a grant
  • A list of your key publications (if appropriate)
  • In addition, students must provide a letter signed by your supervisor, confirming your eligibility
  • SpinalCure will fund up to $2,500.

Notification procedure

We will notify applicants of the outcome within 3 weeks of the closing date.

We request that successful applicants be available for an interview for an article for SpinalCure Australia publications and in the case of travel grants, acknowledge SpinalCure Australia in their presentation.

Peter Blundy

Peter Blundy was a former Australian Navy officer who became a speech-impaired quadriplegic after a balcony rail collapsed, causing him to fall from the second storey of a building. (See more)

Those like Mr Blundy who left a gift to SpinalCure Australia in their will have enabled us to finance some outstanding research over the years, bringing us ever closer to the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
