Abandoned Geron stem cell trial could get back on track

It looks like the world’s first clinical trial using stem-cells for SCI could be given a new lease of life.

Back in 2011 we were all really disappointed when Geron announced it was closing its stem cell programme, even though it had conducted a decade of research and treated four people with spinal cord injury in the first clinical trial of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs).

Now, Geron’s former head Thomas Okarma, founder Michael West and the subsidiary company BioTime have together put in a bid to buy Geron’s stem cell assets in an effort to revive the programme.
