About us

SpinalCure Australia (formerly Australasian Spinal Research Trust) was founded in 1994 with the aim of:

  • Ending the permanence of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) through:
  • Promoting and funding research;
  • Fostering cooperation between disciplines engaged in central nervous system and regeneration research;
  • Monitoring of progress of research projects funded through SCA and the cooperation of international efforts in the field.

Since the beginning SCA has achieved the following:

  • Has directly raised $4.8m for Australian researchers at Institutes and universities across Australia
  • Organised first Australian conference on SCI research
  • Raised profile of SCI research through media relations program
  • Successfully lobbied govts in NSW, Victoria & WA to fund research through speed camera and associated road safety funds
  • Made representation at the Federal Govt Senate Enquiry into Embryonic Stem Cell research and the 2005 Lockhart Review
  • Advisor to NSW govt on Making Connections forum and the late Christopher Reeve’s visit to Australia.
  • Active member of International Campaign to Cure Paralysis (ICCP)
  • Establishing SCA Fellowships in spinal reseach

SCA is developing associations internationally with other organisations aimed at raising funds for this research, especially through the member groups of the International Campaign to Cure Paralysis (ICCP).

In this way SCA can proudly join in the global effort to find a cure for paralysis caused by SCI. We take great encouragement from the knowledge that so many leading scientists both here in Australia and around the world are now working for a cure for SCI.

Administratively SCA strives to be a lean operation and, prior to the appointment of a part time office manager in February 1999, all efforts to raise awareness and funds were conducted by board members and supporters acting as volunteers.

All donations are directed to Research Projects.
