Prof Sarah Dunlop challenges the current future for people with spinal injuries

SCA held a fundraiser and community education event at the Astor Cinema raising $715.40.

Sarah Dunlop, from the WA Neurotrauma Research Program, made a presentation about the importance of exercise in the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries. Currently, when a person acquires a spinal cord injury they are taught how to best manage their newly found disability and then wished all the best as they re enter the community.

She presented information to illustrate that exercise can prevent further loss of function and can improve a spinal cord injury. Sarah will also be talking about the need to continue to exercise after a spinal cord injury to ensure that the body is ready for when a regenerative therapy is available.

Her presentation will challenge the many views that the community and professionals have about the future of a person with a spinal cord injury.

Fiona Shepherd, WA State Coordinator of Spinal Cure Australia was on hand to answer questions. Fiona was a passenger in a car accident in 2002 resulting in a spinal cord injury.
